We had a lovely day on the river Wey last Wednesday on Gill’s friend Doug’s beautiful boat. Doug’s boat was built in 1934 and he believes that it was used in the evacuation of Dunkirk. It is a stunning boat that he has lovingly restored and it is a vessel of real beauty and character. (see photos)
The girls swabbed the decks for Doug before we headed out on the river to a pub for a great take-out pub lunch that we ate on the boat. Doug’s lovely wife Carol came along and it was great to meet them both. Both the girls had a chance at the helm and Doug was very trusting as the river is pretty narrow and some of the bridges even narrower!
Doug is a very interesting man who grew up in France as a child. When the war broke out he was evacuated back to England via Bordeaux as the Germans advanced. He remembers bridges being blown up after they passed as they raced towards freedom with the German Army closing in.
Thank you Doug and Carol for a fantastic afternoon and the girls and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
