The great thing about a ‘low expectation’ morning is you can’t lose! I was lonely and on my own this morning as the rest of the boys had the morning off and were tucked up at home and with rain falling most of the night and up to 2500metres at times, with it drizzling at the Gourmandine, with wind forecast at altitude and with an avalanche risk 0f 3 climbing to 4/5 it wasn’t the most inspiring of mornings. But Richard and Craig showed up ready to go and we ended up having a really good morning. We started off with a positive test off the Verte, followed by a lower Borsat and meadows before heading up the Motte. The Motte was in the lee and we enjoyed some excellent snow off the Genepy and in the Combe between the Genepy and Cairn. Plan A was ski to the Motte and back before going to the Garage to watch the tennis and have a pizza but the Motte was so good we circled back around to ski it again. We then had some good skiing under the Mont Blanc chair on the way home to finish up an extremely satisfying morning at 12:15.
Richard and I then went to the Garage and walked in with Thiem leading 2 sets to 1 and looking in control in his search of his first Grand Slam. Early in the fourth set he missed a routine volley at the net and his confidence and game deserted him, and you don’t need to invite Novak back into a match. Djokovic took over and never looked back and Richard and I were gutted, as were everyone else except Djokovic fans, and the tennis was significantly less satisfying than this morning’s skiing. (And even less satisfying was West Ham drawing 3-3 after leading 3-1 in the second half!)
I might try to stop by the Danois tonight as reports are that the Sunday night act is very good. Maybe see you there! Stay tuned!
PS At 3:30 PM it’s still drizzling in town.
